The legend behind the Shri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations is explained here. According to the mythology, Krishna’s maternal uncle (Mama) King Kansa wanted to kill him. The story begins with the marriage of Devki and Vasudev. Kansa is the brother of Devki heard a voice in the air (Aakashwani) that he would be killed by the eighth son of his sister Devki. King Kansa was going to kill Devki but the Vasudev (Husband of Devki) promised Kansa that he will give all his newborn babies to him. Kansa killed all the newborn children of Devki and Vasudev. When Lord Krishna took birth Vasudev took him across the Yamuna Gokul and leave him in the Nanda Baba’s home. There he was nurtured by Yashodha and Nanda. The festival Janmashtami is not only the mark of Krishna’s birth but also his triumph over King Kansa. This day bazaars are decorated and people are very happy. People do Krisha’s worship in their homes on this day. Some of the Devotees fast the whole day of Janmashtami. Children’s activities and functions are organized in schools and colleges. Small children wear the clothes like Krishna also wear the peacock feather crown (Morpankh Mukut). The play of Krishna and his friend Saudama was organized this day.
